V-God and Fab IV asserted their might in the boys U19 and women’s open divisions of the 3×3 Hoopfest Marianas 2017 after prevailing in their respective title matches last Sunday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
V-God, which topped the Saipan leg of the tournament after defeating Big B’s, this time was paired against the visiting Tinian Sports Association Typhoon and won anew in the competition finale, 11-8. Jeffrey Castro and Dean Blake scored 4 points apiece, while Franco Bondoc made 3 markers in V-God’s title-clinching victory in the boys U19 division. Dustin Sablan led Typhoon’s losing cause after logging 5 points, while Earl Borja and Juanis King chipped in 2 and 1, respectively.
Typhoon moved into the finals following a 22-6 demolition of Team Luta in the semis. As expected, Sablan starred in Typhoon’s Final Four win after sizzling for 13 points. Bradley Lizama added 5, while King and Borja had 2 markers apiece. Team Luta drew 3 points from Noah Mendiola, while Mark Mendiola had a 2-point basket, and Crisler Mendiola knocked in the other field goal for the losing squad.
In the other Final Four pairing, V-God slipped past familiar rival Big B’s, 19-14, to notch the second finals ticket in the division.
Blake towered above Big B’s players and scored a bundle inside the paint to finish with a game-high 9 points. Castro backed him up, contributing 8, while Bondoc registered 2 points. Angelo Factor posted 6 points for Big B’s, while Christian Arceo recorded 4, and Jelbert Quitugua and Aaron Ogumoro had 2 apiece.
In the women’s open division finals, Fab IV downed CTSI, 14-8.
Sisters Anna Lei and Eleina Santos made things happen for Fab IV as they combined for all but one of the winning squad’s production. Anna Lei scored 7 points, while Eleina logged 6. Halle Kenty drilled the other point for Fab IV, which also ruled the Saipan leg of the tournament after beating HiDaze in last month’s finals.
CTSI foiled a Fab IV-HiDaze title rematch after prevailing against the latter in the first semis game, 15-13. Fab IV, on the other hand, earned a return trip to the finals after eliminating Blue Babes, 12-8.
