Celebrating over 70 years of national workforce inclusion
The National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which the CNMI will observe this October, celebrates more than 70 years of workforce inclusion and innovation. This year’s theme is “Inclusion Drives Innovation.”
Labor Secretary Vicky Benavente said: “Diversity is an important role in workforce success and this year, and the Office of Disability Employment Policy celebrates the contributions of workers with disabilities and moves to strengthen the value of an inclusive workforce. We also understand that this is one of many avenues with regard to increasing the CNMI labor workforce. It’s important we celebrate its significance.”
Early this year, the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation reiterated the importance of gainful employment for their clients and the strengthening of the community partnerships and collaboration with the State Rehabilitation Council.
Gov. Ralph DLG. Torres said that disability employment has improved over the years, and more employees and employers are better equipped for employment and accommodations.
“The right to live independently by providing opportunities for employment is still very important. Partnerships with the private sector and agencies like OVR, [Northern Marianas Protection and Advocacy Systems Inc.], [Workforce Investment Agency], and other training programs advocate this as we continue to build on addressing our workforce needs and reaching our ultimate vision to increase the number of our local workforce so that our economy continues to grow and more opportunities are available for every person willing to work for it,” Torres said.
Benavente noted that disability employment will continue to strengthen through consistent awareness and partnerships.
Torres added that ODEP reinforces the Americans with Disabilities Act, which works to increase the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of community life, including employment while encouraging the adoption of effective policies and practices.
