(Walter Cepeda Sutherland)  The Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles upset erstwhile frontrunner Lady Geckos of Saipan International School (SIS1) in Thursday’s Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization girls volleyball league held at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

SIS1 started strong and took the opening set, 25-15, but GCA roared back and stole the second set, 25-23.

The Lady Eagles then pulled off the upset in the final set, 15-12, to avenge its lone loss- coincidentally against the same Lady Geckos-during the first round of the season

GCA is now tied with SIS in the standings as both teams now hold identical win-loss records of 9-1.

In addition, Kagman High School’s Lady Ayuyus bested MHS’ Junior Dolphins (MHS2) on Thursday. KHS won the first set, 25-15, but stumbled in the second set, 17-25, before grinding out the win in the final set, 19-17.

Meanwhile, back on Tuesday, KHS was defeated by MHS1 in all three sets, 25-10, 25-11, and 15-12.

MHS’ Varsity Lady Dolphins (MHS1) swept SIS’ junior squad (SIS2) in all three sets, 25-17, 26-24, and 15-8.

SIS1 fended off MHS2 on Tuesday in all three sets, 25-3, 25-10, and 15-10.

As a result, third-ranked MHS1 improved its card to 8-2, while SIS2 evened its record to five wins with a handful of defeats; KHS holds a 4-6 slate.

Notably, Saipan Southern High School (0-10) and Marianas Baptist Academy (3-7) have pulled out of the competition.

Organizers have moved up Tuesday’s matches up to 4pm when GCA hosts SIS2 on the north court with SIS1 taking on KHS on the south end; both MHS squads are on a bye.
