3 slots remain for top chef competition
The CNMI Next Top Chef Committee is currently working to fill the three remaining slots for its upcoming competition.
Last Wednesday, the committee met to discuss current updates and it was agreed to open up competition slots to independent chefs, i.e., chefs who do not work in a restaurant or a hotel.
This will be the second year that the Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands will be a major sponsor and host of the Next Top Chef contest.
According to HANMI chair Gloria Cavanagh, the association looks forward to this event because it is exciting and has a purpose—to support the culinary arts on Saipan and to provide an opportunity for individuals who are passionate about the culinary arts to showcase their skills, while also raising funds for the Empty Vessels Ministry Foundation.
According to Cavanagh, the event will showcase 12 individuals who are passionate about their culinary work. These individuals will be competing for cash prizes, the first Next Top Chef trophy, and the title of the CNMI Next Top Chef.
Cavanagh said that six of the 12 slots have been reserved for a few of the major hotels on Saipan: Hyatt Regency Saipan, Kanoa Resort, Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, Grandvio Resort, Mariana Resort & Spa, and Saipan World Resort. One slot is reserved for the Everest Kitchen restaurant and two slots are reserved for Northern Marianas Trades Institute students.
The competition consists of three challenge rounds: the appetizers round, the main course round, and the last round will be the desert round with elimination rounds in between. Professional chefs from Guam and Saipan will judge the challenge courses.
The funds raised from the competition will fund the many projects under the EVMF outreach programs on Tinian and Rota, the summer program, and for needy families in the Northern Marianas.
The committee is urging individuals to sign up now for the upcoming the 2017 edition of the Next Top Chef, which will be held on Nov. 9 at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan Dinner Show Pavilion. Tickets are limited to 300 so interested individuals are encouraged to buy their tickets as soon as possible.
For individuals who are interested in applying for the remaining chef slots, or are just interested in being a part of the competition, visit all HANMI hotels for registrations or call the EVMF at 235-2340.
