EEO opportunity, civil rights updates at SHRM meeting

An official of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Honolulu and two lawyers from the Washington, D.C. office of the U.S. Department of Justice will be the next guest speakers of the Society for Human Resource Management NMI Chapter on Friday, Sept. 22.

Glory Gervacio, director of the EEOC’s Honolulu Office, along with Jenna Grambort and Sebastian Aloot from the U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, D.C., will be presenting on the topic of “Equal Employment Opportunity and Civil Rights–Updates and Current Issues.”

The SHRM program will be held at the Hyatt Regency Saipan’s SandCastle on Friday, from 8:30am to 2:30pm. This will be a special full-day program that will discuss a range of EEO and civil rights issues to include immigration-related employment practices, increased retaliation concerns, EEO-related investigation procedures, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, an transsexual) protections, and other varied topics of concern. They will provide information on the rights of employees and how businesses can avoid discrimination and create a better workplace for all. They will also be available to answer questions.

Gervacio last visited the CNMI and spoke at a SHRM conference in September 2015.

Grambort serves as a trial counsel with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices.

Aloot is a special litigation counsel with the DOJ and used to serve as the Commonwealth attorney general during the administration of former governor Froilan Tenorio.

This presentation is open to the public and includes the Hyatt lunch buffet and morning snacks and drinks at the cost of $40 for SHRM members and $50 for non-members.
