Students, parents invited to Service Academy Nights
On Sept. 20, 21, and 22, the Office of Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) will be hosting Service Academy Nights on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian.
“These free workshops are open to all high school and college students in the Marianas who are interested in learning more about the exceptional educational and career opportunities offered by the nation’s military academies,” Sablan said. “And because they play such an important role in the success of their students, I also encourage parents, educators, and other advisors to attend.”
Congressional staff will present the eligibility guidelines and process for applying to the U.S. service academies, most of which require a nomination from Sablan.
Several service academy graduates, including Coast Guard Academy graduate and current Coast Guard officer Lt. Christine Igisomar from the Marianas, will also be on hand to share their personal experiences and insight and answer questions.
Details for next week’s Service Academy Nights are as follows:
Saipan: Wednesday, Sept. 20, American Memorial Park Visitors Center, 5pm to 7pm
Rota: Thursday, Sept. 21, Dr. Rita H. Inos Sr./Jr. High School cafeteria, 5pm to 7pm
Tinian: Friday, Sept. 22, Tinian Jr./Sr. High School Cafeteria, 5pm to 7pm
There are four open slots reserved for students from the Northern Mariana Islands for the school year beginning fall 2018: two at the military academy in West Point, New York; one at the naval academy in Annapolis, Maryland; and one at the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York.
For these academies, the deadline to apply for a nomination from Sablan is Dec. 8, 2017.
For the Coast Guard Academy, admission is competitive nationwide, and no congressional nomination is required, though Sablan may write letters of recommendation.
In addition to next week’s Service Academy Nights, the congressional office is offering special workshops during regular school hours for any interested high school or college groups upon request.
