DPS to get 20 new vehicles

The Department of Public Safety will get 20 new police vehicles, according to DPS Commissioner Robert A. Guerrero.

He disclosed that DPS will get 10 vehicles through the Office of Grants Management.

On top of that, Guerrero said, DPS will also get 10 more police vehicles though funds from the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Of the first 10 vehicles, which are small sports utility vehicles, six will be for Saipan, two for Tinian, and two for Rota.

The six vehicles for Saipan will be assigned to the koban (substation) in Garapan and substations in Chalan Kanoa and Kagman. DPS is planning to put up substations in San Roque, Koblerville, and in Dandan.

“The contracts have been processed, routed as we speak. The orders will be completed, hopefully by next month or so,” Guerrero said.

The additional 10 vehicles, he said, will be for patrol on Saipan only.

The commissioner said they are hoping to get those vehicles in two months, as there will be a bidding process.

“The more police presence in the community, the better. We are trying to bring policing down to the community level,” Guerrero said.
