Torres urges residents to be prepared for disasters

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres is urging all CNMI residents to be more aware of and be better prepared for any natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the islands.

“An informed community is a ready community,” said Torres in signing a proclamation on Friday declaring September as Commonwealth Preparedness Month.

Torres hopes that natural or man-made disasters do not come but residents should still be prepared at any rate.

“Let’s be prepared as much as we can in case if it does come,” said the governor at the proclamation signing at the start of the Labor Day celebration at the Garapan Fishing Base.

The proclamation was in line with the nation commemorating National Preparedness Month. The celebration highlights the importance of having an emergency plan, exercising that emergency plan, and staying informed.

Torres underscored the importance of investing in the preparedness of families, businesses, and communities to reduce fatalities and economic devastation.

He said the celebration creates an important opportunity for every resident to prepare their homes, businesses, and communities for any type of emergency, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.
