Woman drowns at Obyan
Torres issues special marine advisory due to intensifying tropical storm
A Korean woman who was reported missing while swimming at Obyan Beach yesterday afternoon was later found dead during a search operation.
This developed as Gov. Ralph DLG Torres issued a special marine advisory due to Tropical Storm Sanvu. Torres urged the public and inexperienced mariners to avoid venturing to exposed reef lines and beaches, especially along west-facing shores, as rip currents were life threatening.
Torres also advised those operating smaller boats to avoid sailing.
A source disclosed that the 34-year-old Korean woman was last seen swimming at Obyan Beach at 4:30pm.
Department of Public Safety Boating Safety Unit personnel then launched a search to locate the victim.
Another source confirmed that the body was recovered and that it’s a drowning case.
As of press time, DPS had yet to release information about the incident. Investigation is ongoing.
The Korean woman is reportedly the fifth ocean/beach drowning victim this year.
The last drowning incident happened last July 16 when a 26-year-old man who went fishing with a companion was later found dead and is believed to have drowned in the ocean near the Gov. Eloy S. Inos Peace Park in Puerto Rico, Saipan.
As of 7:15pm yesterday, the center of Tropical Storm Sanvu was located about 325 miles north-northeast of Agrihan, 365 miles north-northeast of Pagan, 570 miles of Saipan, and 695 miles north-northeast of Guam.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam, Sanvu was moving toward the north at 13 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds increased to 50mph.
Sanvu is expected to make a turn toward the northwest with little change in forward speed over the next 24 hours. Sanvu is forecast to intensify though today, Wednesday.
NWS said converging monsoon winds south of Sanvu will maintain heavy showers and some thunderstorms through today.
