Man allegedly burglarizes truck at Forbidden Island

An intoxicated teenager sustained cuts in his arm when he allegedly stole a bag from a truck that was parked in the trail parking area of the Forbidden Island Lookout in Kagman last Friday afternoon.

Maypeace Fujita Peter, 18, had small cuts in his right arm when he reached inside a pickup truck’s window to take the purse, police said. It was alleged that he shattered the truck’s window with a rock.

Peter, also known as Tin Tin, allegedly smelled of alcohol and was also found in possession of marijuana leaves.

Police recovered the victim’s small bag containing multiple bracelets, a necklace, a ring, and her identification cards.

Peter, who admitted burglarizing the truck, led the police to where he threw the bag in a jungle area in Kagman.

Peter was then released as police did a follow-up investigation, but re-arrested him on Wednesday night in Kagman on charges of burglary, theft, illegal possession of a controlled substance, and minor consuming alcohol.

His bail was set yesterday at $10,000 cash; preliminary hearing is on Aug. 29.

Chief Public Defender Douglas Hartig was named Peter’s counsel.

Burglarized was a 2017 Toyota Tundra Crew cab pickup truck. Its rear passenger side window was shattered. The purse owned by the car owner’s was stolen from the vehicle. The purse reportedly contained jewelry, two iPhone 6 units, and $60, all worth $7,000. In addition, there were military identification cards and other identification cards of the victim.

The victim told police that she and her sister and a female friend, who owns the truck, arrived at the Forbidden Island Lookout last Friday, Aug. 18, at 4pm or 4:30pm to go hiking. When they came back from their hike at 6pm or 6:30pm, a police sergeant told them that their truck had been burglarized.

The police sergeant had responded to the Forbidden Island Lookout after receiving a call about the burglary. A witness said he and several tourists were at the Lookout when they heard a car alarm go off. They then saw a man, later identified as Peter, running away from the truck with a woman’s purse.

A witness aboard a tour bus followed Peter, who was walking down the gravel road from the Forbidden Island Lookout. Two other responding police officers later found and secured Peter near the Kagman fire station. All stolen items were recovered.

Peter told police that he had consumed six cans of beer alone and proceeded to Forbidden Island to steal money.

Peter said he threw a rock at the rear window of the truck and reached into the broken window and took the purse. He said he panicked because he triggered the car’s alarm when he tried to open the car’s door.

The defendant told police that ran toward Laolao Bay Golf & Resort, where he threw the purse. He then walked toward the Kagman fire station, where police saw and arrested him.
