A 33-year-old man who sexually abused a girl since she was in first grade until she was in fourth grade was slapped with a 12-year prison term yesterday.

Sidney A. Aldan was sentenced to 20 years in prison, all suspended except for 12 years, for sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.

In a letter that Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo read in court, the victim said that she continues “to suffer until this day.”

“She is still deeply suffering,” said Govendo, citing that, in the letter, the now 15-year-old victim even thought of killing herself due to the trauma of what Aldan did to her.

Aldan was actually accused of sexually abusing two girls. He pleaded guilty to the charge relating to one of the victims as part of a plea deal.

Aldan will not be eligible for parole. He was given credit for 541 days of time served. Once he completes his sentence, he will be placed on eight years of probation.

Aldan was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine, $125 in court costs, plus probation fees, among other conditions.

Before the judge handed down the sentence, Aldan apologized to the victim and to the CNMI.

The victim’s statement, Govendo said, was the main aggravating factor and shows that that she is still suffering to this day. Had there been sexual penetration, Aldan would have gotten the maximum sentence, Govendo said.

In her letter, the girl said described Aldan as a “monster” who took her childhood. The girl stated, among other things, that she is always worried, scared, has nightmares, and even thought about ending her life.

“I’m crying at this moment,” said the girl in the letter. She and her family now live in Guam.

The judge said that Aldan’s sentence sends a message to the community that these acts of sexual abuse and sexual assault are not going to be tolerated.

Under the plea agreement, the parties agreed that the sentence will be between eight years to 20 years imprisonment.

Chief Prosecutor Michele Harris recommended 20 years of imprisonment. She said the victim in this case is a very young vulnerable child.

Harris said that Aldan first sexually abused the victim when she was in first grade, then escalated until she was in fourth grade.

She pointed out that Aldan has a history of violence against his intimate partner that led to the court’s issuance of a restraining order.

“The victim’s letter still speaks to the trauma that she has experienced,” Harris said.

Aldan’s lawyer, assistant public defender Nancy Dominski, recommended an eight-year prison sentence, saying Aldan is remorseful, has pleaded guilty, and that no weapon was used.

Dominski said Aldan is young and a hardworking man for his family.

Police said that, according to the victim, Aldan had been sexually abusing her since she was in first grade and that the last incident occurred when she was in fourth grade.

Police said the incident happened from March 2011 to 2013.

According to the second girl, Aldan touched her private parts thrice. The second girl claimed that the first victim once wrote a letter to her, saying Aldan touched her also.

The second girl said her mother found the letter and confronted her if Aldan was also sexually abusing her. The second girl then told her mother.

Aldan then fled to Guam.

A Crime Stoppers’ tip led to Aldan’s arrest in March 2016 in Koblerville.
