An employee of the Tinian Mayor’s Office recently completed a weeklong grantsmanship training in Honolulu, Hawaii, that lasted from July 16 to July 21, 2017.

Alexis Hofschneider had previously written grants for the Tinian Mayor’s Office, but the training program offered her more insight into the grant-writing process.

“The program not only reinforced my writing skills, but, more importantly, it introduced strategies for successful program planning. The Grantsmanship Center also provided the class with useful materials to bring home and use as we prepare more proposals,” Hofschneider said.

The training, hosted by The Grantsmanship Center, covered the basics of grant proposal writing and program planning. Attendees also had the opportunity to draft their own grants, review others’ proposals, and seek out funding sources.

“I first learned how to write a grant through my own research, so it was nice to receive formal training,” Hofschneider said. “The group setting was also helpful. My classmates’ experience with grant proposals ranged from novice to expert, so I got to work with and receive feedback from classmates who were seasoned grant writers.”

Tinian and Aguiguan Mayor Joey Patrick San Nicolas saw the training program as an opportunity to invest in his staff and community.

“Tinian is unique in its economic challenges, especially in today’s climate. To build and stabilize our economy, we must diversify our funding sources and seeking grants is one way of doing so. It’s important that our staff learn how to prepare grants so that our programs are properly funded and community needs are met,” he said.

The Grantsmanship Center, based in Los Angeles, California, has been supporting grant-seeking efforts for over 40 years. The center holds workshops several times a year at various locations around the country. Topics include grant writing, preparing federal grants, and grants management.

San Nicolas hopes to send more staff to The Grantsmanship Center’s workshops and expand the Tinian Mayor’s Office’s grant-seeking capabilities. (PR)
