The week of Aug. 13 through 19 has been designated as Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Week, to highlight the importance of the support employers extend to Army Reserve employees.

During a proclamation signing last Tuesday, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres said it is important to appreciate the employers who understand the special circumstances that come with hiring an Army Reserve or National Guard.

According to Torres, these employers understand that these individuals may come and go for weeks or months at a time.

There are many servicemen on the islands who also serve their country in the Army Reserve or in the National Guard. These men and women are constantly on call against supposed threats or to lend a helping hand in response to disasters around the world.

Individuals who serve as a reserve or in the National Guard live normal lives while awaiting their next mission. While on standby, these individuals take up civilian jobs.

The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves, an agency under the U.S. Department of Defense, honors those employers who let these individuals attend to their military duties, while keeping their position on hold until their return. The ESGR works to support reservists and National Guard members through the security of a civilian job when they are called to duty.

ESGR Guam-NMI chair David J. Sablan, who was present during the proclamation signing, said it is important to recognize these servicemen and their dedication in protecting the country. It is also important that these servicemen are sure that the government cares for their wellbeing despite the tough economic times.

According to Sablan, to show their appreciation to the employers, the agency will take 25 local employers for a ride on a KC-135 refueling jet to show them the process of re-fueling B1 bombers.

ESGR also held an awarding ceremony last Tuesday at the Aqua Resort Club to recognize five employers who support the ESGR mission.
