Torres has faith in Trump

Whatever happens with the North Korea situation, Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has “full faith and trust” in U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

“Being on the frontline of the threat from North Korea, along with our brothers and sisters in Guam, I place my full faith and trust in our President to make the appropriate decisions for the security and protection of our nation,” reads a statement issued by the Office of the Governor yesterday.

The statement also clarified that besides just the inhabitants of the Marianas region, “all Americans…are at risk of any threat from North Korea and other foreign enemies.”

Now is the time to “rally behind our commander-in-chief during this critical time in order to protect our nation and the proud citizens of our country living in the U.S. territories.

“I support our President and our U.S. military, and I am proud to fly the American flag in the Western Pacific,” the statement added.

As reported by several news outlets, North Korea’s state media claims to have a plan to launch missiles over Japan and into Guam waters by mid-August this year. According to the reports, the missiles would reportedly fly for 3,356.7 kilometers (2,086 miles) in 17 minutes and 45 seconds to reach Guam waters. Reports claim that up to four missiles would be launched toward Guam.

Guam Gov. Eddie B. Calvo stated yesterday that Guam is “prepared for any eventuality” but he also pointed out that the island has defense systems in place to fend off these types of attacks.

It appears the CNMI relies on this defense system.

CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management special assistant Gerald Deleon Guerrero said as much yesterday, saying that Guam has the closest military assets here. He said Guam has very good military assets that can be launched at once if any attack happens.

He said they are coordinating with the Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense.

“So far, the threat level hasn’t escalated and there is nothing to panic about,” he said.

If things do escalate, people should be prepared by stocking on food supplies, water, and canned goods, Deleon Guerrero said. “Because you never know. Preparedness is the best thing to do right now.”

Gov. Ralph Torres has created the Nuclear Threat Working Group to respond to a nuclear threat. HSEM is the head of the group. (With Ferdie de la Torre)
