Kilili wins praise for veterans work
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Following Tuesday night’s passage of the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, the American Legion has praised the work of Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) on the legislation. The American Legion represents more than 2 million veterans nationwide.
“The American Legion thanks you for your leadership on this transformative legislation that will directly benefit veterans and their families,” wrote national commander Charles E. Schmidt to Sablan. “We will continue to work closely with you to ensure that veterans and their families rally across this country for these improvements. We are proud to fight alongside you for this important legislation until it is officially signed into law by the President.”
Sablan credited the American Legion and other veterans service organizations, or VSOs, for the successful passage of the Colmery Act.
“Hearing the voices of veterans across the country, expressed by the VSOs, really helped to guide the drafting of the Colmery Act and helps in all the work we do on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee,” Sablan said.
“And, of course, hearing from my own veterans in the Marianas, also lets me know where the law needs to be changed to make sure that veterans get what they were promised.”
The Colmery Act, named for the principal architect of the G.I. Bill, makes over two dozen adjustments to educational benefits that veterans receive. One of the most important is ending the 15-year cut-off for tuition assistance. The Colmery Act makes that educational benefit available for a veteran’s lifetime. (PR)
