A small island across the Rota marina that is locally known as Anyuta Island has been dedicated in memory of the island’s former mayor and is now called the Mayor Prudencio Taisacan Manglona Harbor Island Park.
Rota Mayor Efraim M. Atalig and his management team put together the arrangements to make the ceremony happen.
The Rota municipality is now working with the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to put up power poles on the island that will provide streetlights and a power source so that visitors in the area can conveniently enjoy using the place. Park goers currently use generators and inverters to power lights and other electronic devices while camping or having small gatherings on the island.
Regulatory permits have been prepared and submitted for further review and approval.
For many years, the Rota community have gathered and socialized on the island for various occasions. Tourist and other visitors also had the opportunity to enjoy the ocean breeze at the park overlooking the Station of the Cross in Songsong Village.
Boaters participating in annual Rota fishing derbies have easy access to the island.
Earlier this year, Atalig contracted a project to design and construct Chamorro huts on the island to better serve the community, tourists, and visitors.
Manglona served Rota for nearly 40 years as municipal mayor (1978-1994).
During the recent dedication of the island, Atalig said that, as a child, his father would bring him along to campaign gatherings and that he had the privilege to witness and hear the words of wisdom delivered by the late mayor, which inspired him to become a politician.
Donald Manglona, a grandson of Manglona, expressed appreciation to Rota leaders and the people of Rota dedicating the island to his grandfather. (PR)
