NMC to host Project PROA summer camp

Share

The Project PROA program at Northern Marianas College is inviting high school students to enroll in its weeklong summer camp program, which begins July 24.

The one-week camp aims to provide students with an opportunity to strengthen their ties to their cultural heritage as well as improve their reading, writing, and math skills.

Participants of the Project PROA summer camp program will engage in morning academic sessions from 8:30am to 12pm and afternoon cultural activities from 1pm to 3pm with 500 Sails, a non-profit corporation. Each day will include presentations about the history of the canoes in the Marianas, swimming/sailing, and observation of the canoe-building process.

To qualify for the camp, participants must be an incoming senior at the high school level and self-identify as Chamorro and/or Carolinian, per grant requirements. Preference will be given to ongoing Project PROA participants who have previously taken the NMC English and math placement tests. All others interested must be program eligible to participate.

Participation is absolutely free with lunch and snacks provided as well.

The Project PROA program coordinators are working closely with the Northern Marianas College’s Community Development Institute to facilitate the enrichment portion of the camp, which will allow participants to develop the essential skills needed to place in college level English and math.

Seats are slowly filling up on Saipan and will be on a first-come, first-serve basis so interested students are highly encouraged to visit the PROA Center in Building I at the NMC Saipan campus, between 8am and 5pm. Forms are available on site or online at www.marianas.edu/projectproa.php and must be submitted no later than Wednesday, July 19, 2017, at 4pm.

For more information, contact Kaelani Demapan, Project PROA program coordinator, by phone at (670) 237-6777 or by email at projectproa@marianas.edu. (NMC)
