The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library capped its “Build a Better World” on June 30, 2017, with the 11th Annual Collaborative Summer Library Program.

A total of 141 children ages 6 years old to 12 years old participated in an intensive two-week-long session filled with reading, arts and craft activities, engineering and science activities, movie days, computer classes, guest presentations, field trips, and more.

Acting JKPL director Erlinda Cabrera Naputi, who shared the importance of literacy, said that because of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, “our children read over 1,500 books in a span of two weeks. Congratulations, children, families, guest presenters, sponsors, volunteers, and my hardworking JKPL team!”

Participating children received a certificate of completion, an eco-friendly book bag, school supplies, a water bottle, and a raffle draw in which each received a gift certificate from one of the following donors/sponsors: Regal cinema movie passes and gift certificates from Joeten Enterprises, I Love Saipan, Borderline, Herman’s Modern Bakery, Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, Saipan Sea Ventures, Lao Lao Bay Golf & Resort, Pacific Islands Club, and Joeten Ace Hardware.

Naputi pointed out that the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library is the CNMI state library information hub, preserving CNMI’s cultural heritage and connecting people, libraries and government to the resources and tools they need to succeed and to build a strong community.

Paticipants with the “Most Books Read” award were given a magic kit provided by the Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library.

The top readers are: Kevin Bhujel (Session 1A), Julius Torres (Session 1B), Jose Iguel (Session 2A), and Dereck Rangamar (Session 2B).

A grand prize sponsored by Lollipops for the “Overall Top Reader” was awarded to Kevin Bhujel, who read 50 books in two weeks.

Following the award ceremony, a lively outdoors celebratory carnival was organized in collaboration with Imperial Pacific International Ltd.

Breakfast and lunch were provided by the CNMI Public School System’s Food and Nutrition Service from vendor LSG Sky Chefs. The Friends of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library donated a celebratory cake for dessert.

An assortment of carnival games were conducted for the children: face painting, IPI’s Arts Café where children painted original drawings on canvas and kept them for souvenirs, basketball hoop tournaments, and many more.

The Children’s Summer Reading Program at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library was extended to independent reading activities this July and August.

“If you were unable to attend the CSLP Summer Program in June, you can participate in independent reading activities at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library. Participants are required to have a JKPL library card with no pending fees or fines, and fill out a reading log. Children who read 10 books will qualify to enter in a raffle drawing for a chance to win even more prizes.”

Joeten Superstore has donated a Schwinn Roadster Trike, one of the grand prizes, which will be raffled off at the end of the summer for Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Summer Reading Challenge!

Other prizes to be raffled off include Regal Cinema movie passes, National Office Supply gift certificates, Bestseller gift certificates, Joeten gift certificates and more! (Saipan Tribune)
