Saipan In’tl Fishing Tournament on July 15-16
The Saipan Fishermen’s Association will hold the 33rd Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament this weekend of July 15-16.
Last year, more than 60 boats and 200 fishermen and crew competed in the two-day fishing derby. Barring inclement weather, this year’s organizers are anticipating a similar turnout.
Game fish categories are: Bill Fish (1st-3rd), Yellow Fin (1st-3rd), Wahoo (1st-3rd), Mahi Mahi (1st-3rd), and Skipjack (1st-3rd). Prizes will also be awarded for total weight and grand prize, while the Saipan Fishermen’s Association will award a special $10,000 prize to the first participant to land a marlin weighing over the record 942 lbs.
The tournament registration cost is $150 per boat, inclusive of a captain and one crew member. Each additional angler is $25.
Pre-registration will be held at Smiling Cove Marina on July 14 from 5pm to 6:30pm, where the Saipan Fishermen’s Association will provide a tournament briefing.
The tournament will begin at 6am and end at 6pm each day.
The Department of Public Safety’s Boating Safety Unit will conduct courtesy boat safety inspections. Participants should contact the Boating Safety office at 664-9123 make an appointment.
The awards ceremony will be held on July 18 at 6pm at The Magellan’s, Pacific Islands Club Saipan. Non-tournament participants will be charged $30/adult and $15/ages 4-11. The SFA will produce a souvenir tournament program booklet, to be provided to all participating captains and crew members.
