Man allegedly impersonates cop
A man allegedly confronted a group of women in a car in Garapan early Friday morning, told them to roll down their car’s window and open the door, and identified himself as a police officer.
Jerry Joseph Sammy, 25, was later arrested that same day on charges of impersonating an officer and disturbing the peace.
At yesterday’s bail hearing, Sammy said he is a community officer for a Saipan lawmaker.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho maintained the $1,000 cash bail that was initially imposed in the arrest warrant and set the preliminary hearing for June 26 at 9am.
Assistant public defender Jamal Saleh was appointed as counsel for Sammy. Assistant attorney general Chester Hinds appeared for the government.
Police said a woman called the Department of Public Safety’s 911 on Friday at 5am and reported that two men aboard a blue car with license plate ACP-359 pulled over their car and one identified himself as a police officer.
The caller later told police that she parked her car near Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan while waiting for her friends. When her two friends got into her car, they waited for awhile to decide where to go and eat.
A man, later identified as Sammy, was inside a parked car beside the woman’s vehicle.
Sammy, who was the driver of the car, got down and asked the women what they were doing in the area. Sammy later told the woman he is a police officer and told her to roll down her window.
The woman asked for Sammy’s identification card because he was not wearing a police uniform or driving a marked police car. The woman said she was scared as she smelled the odor of alcohol on Sammy. She tried to roll up the window and lock the doors, but Sammy managed to open her door.
Sammy told them that they cannot just park wherever they want.
The woman then called 911 for police assistance as Sammy was talking to her friend. She said Sammy appeared he was going to take her friends’ wallet so she picked up her phone to call 911.
When Sammy heard her talking on the phone, he walked quickly back to his car and sped off.
She said she was still on the phone talking to the 911 operator when the police found Sammy’s car and pulled it over by the former Flair Bar in Garapan.
