Ol’Aces Extreme downs Northside Wolves
The Ol’Aces Extreme outlasted the Northside Wolves, 51-46, during the lone boys U18 division game played in the 2017 Francisco M. Diaz Memorial Youth League last Monday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The Ol’Aces Extreme held the Northside Wolves to one field goal in the fourth quarter—a triple from Louis Calayag—to take the 5-point victory.
The fourth frame started with the opposing teams in a deadlock, but the Ol’Aces Extreme ended up breaking it and earning the win after drawing two field goals from Jedial Manalo and one each from Lemuel Elnas and Rico Villagomez.
Manalo and Villagomez were among the three Ol’Aces Extreme players who scored in twin digits in their close win with his team-high 16 points. Marvin Sablan chipped in 15, while Villagomez 13.
The Northside Wolves lost the game in the fourth canto after going toe to toe against the Ol’Aces Extreme in the first three behind the steady offense of Duncan Laxa. Laxa had 6 points in the first period that wrapped up in a standoff, 11-all.
Laxa added 6 more in the second frame to duplicate Manalo’s output and the match was still tied by halftime, 24-24. Neither team then seemed to give in at the start of the second half with Laxa teaming up with Calayag in countering Sablan and Manalo’s baskets, as the match was back to square one, going into the final canto.
In the last quarter, the Northside Wolves struggled with only Calayag finding his mark, while the Ol’Aces Extreme drew baskets from three players to secure the win.
Only the Northside Wolves and Ol’Aces Extreme played last Monday, as the first match was forfeited in favor of the NMI Rollers after a no show for Agape Torchbearers.
