LibDay festivities cut to 11 days
The 2017 Liberation Day festivities will be shortened further to a total of just 11 days and will strictly feature local and family-owned businesses.
For several years, annual Liberation Day festivities lasted a month. This year, the newly created Liberation Day committee decided to cut the festivities to just 15 days. It was recently confirmed that the festivities will be shortened again to a total of just 11 days.
The Liberation Day festivities will officially start on June 24 and will end with the parade on Independence Day, July 4, focusing mainly on showcasing local and family-owned businesses.
According to the Liberation Day committee, the plan is to bring back the essence of community and culture, on top of highlighting the family.
Families who have a passion for cooking and wish to be exposed are encouraged to fill out an application with the committee and coming up with unique menus. A menu proposal must be submitted with the vendor application. Upon approval, booth owners are to attend workshops before the first day of the festival and each vendor will also undergo booth inspections.
Another major change this year is the parade. The Liberation Day parade usually starts early on July 4 but this year, the committee decided it would be most convenient to have the parade late in the afternoon.
This time, the parade would start at 4:30pm.
The Liberation Day committee believes this is most convenient so that the community will be able to enjoy the parade when it’s cooler. This will immediately segue to the fireworks.
Despite the shortened time, the committee promises many activities in two weeks. The festival will offer family nights, a dance festival, coconut relays, a chefs booth, and many more family bonding opportunities.
This year, the 2017 Liberation Day royal court have eight candidates: Mikeangela Charfauros, Mikaella Dahil, Chloe Fegurgur, Peyton Gomez, Kaila de Guzman, Maxine Lopez, Riannalyn Manabat, and Carlicia Ruben.
Application forms for the parade floats, vendors, gaming booths, and float competitions are ready for pickup at the Saipan Mayor’s Office.
