Crane accident smashes van’s front
Rolled up rebars that were loaded on a construction crane for the ongoing construction of Imperial Pacific Resort in Garapan fell, smashing the front windshield of a van that was parked behind the ABC Store on Monday afternoon.
The incident did not injure anyone but caused a power outage. Nobody was inside the white Nissan van, which is owned by ABC Store, police said.
The Department of Public Safety released information about the accident only on Friday, a day after Rep. Edwin Propst (Ind-Saipan) disclosed the incident in his Facebook account.
DPS spokesman Sgt. Jason Tarkong said that police were called on Monday at 2:41pm, to entertain a damage property complaint.
When police got there, they saw Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s emergency line crew fixing the power line as there was a power outage.
Tarkong said the ABC manager said he wanted to report that the company’s white Nissan van was damaged as a result of rebars falling on it.
Police investigation showed that a crane was moving a bunch of rolled up rebars at the construction site. As the crane was pulling up, the rebars swung into the van, smashing the front windshield. The hood was also slightly damaged.
Tarkong said the cable line touched the electric line, causing the power shutdown in Garapan.
Tarkong said he has no information how long the outage lasted and the areas affected.
