Ex-cop gets 1-year in prison for beating cop wife
A former police officer with prior criminal and traffic convictions who beat up his wife, also a police officer, last January was slapped with a maximum sentence of one-year in prison.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho told 39-year-old Ramon Saures Kaipat that “everyone deserves a chance” but also warned him not to squander that chance.
“If you listen carefully, it says a chance. It does not say everyone deserves many chances,” said the judge.
Kaipat was given credit for two months and 15 days of time served.
Camacho said he remembers administering the oath for the new police graduates, including Kaipat, only last year. The judge said he imposes the maximum sentence on Kaipat so he and other law enforcers remember their sworn duty and are deterred from committing crimes.
Camacho pointed out that Kaipat has prior convictions where he received lenient sentences.
Kaipat has two prior convictions for disturbing the peace and assault and battery. He also has two temporary restraining orders in which the petitioner is also the wife, plus another TRO involving another woman. Kaipat also had eight traffic cases, including one for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Assistant attorney general Jonathan Wilbersheild had recommended a prison sentence of six months and other conditions.
Defense counsel Rosemond Santos had recommended prison sentence of 30 days with credit for time served.
According to police, Kaipat hit his wife several times on the head and body using his hands and knees on Jan. 13, 2017 on Saipan. Police learned that the couple had just come from a party for patrol officers at a hotel. While the wife was talking with her sister on the cellphone, Kaipat allegedly grabbed the phone and her hair and beat her up.
