James De La Cruz, a counselor at Marianas High School, was the overall winner of the 2017 Gold’s Gym Transformation Challenge, which held its awards banquet last April 22 at Everest Kitchen.
De La Cruz as one of the 33 challengers who finished the 12-week challenge and as a group, the participants lost nearly 400 lbs and 81 inches off their waistlines.
According to De La Cruz “ My inspiration was the thought that I wanted to be a better person, accept challenges, improve and losing weight was one of the rewards of that goal. Winning the challenge showed the commitment, discipline, passion, effort, hard work, and motivation I have throughout my journey.”
The other winners in the men’s 18-35 age bracket were Ronnel Mostales, Zackery Concepcion, and Leopoldo Duenas. Winners in the men’s 36 and above age bracket were Antonio Rodriguez, Steven Sahagon, and Patrick Castillon. Women’s 18-36 age bracket winners were Michelle Concepcion, Jacqueline Che, and Diane Abigania Mallari. Women’s 36 and above winners were Patty Aguon-Cruz, Laurina Boyer, and Ramona Corpuz. All received Gold’s Gym certificates to insure their fitness journey to continue.
Aside from the physical transformations, the challenge also taught the participants discipline, courage, and commitment to achieve their goals. Each challenger was asked to submit essays and share their incredible weight loss journey. Tony Yarobwemal was awarded a one-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Saipan for his inspirational piece. Yarobwemal’s turning point to get fit was when he almost joined the “Club 300” last year and he recently completed the Saipan Half Marathon and he now weighs below 200 lbs.
Gold’s Gym’s partners in this transformation challenge are Michlelob Ultra from MarPac, PHI Pharmacy, Saipan Apparel, and Brabu Pharmacy & Wellness Center and raffle prizes were donated by T-Galleria, Hyatt Regency Saipan, and Pacific Islands Club.
“The only person who can control how you feel every day and how to take on your life is yourself. My goal right now is to help people know they can change and improve their lives when they want,” De La Cruz stated and such is a statement of a true winner not only in the challenge but also in life.
Tyce Mister, general manager of Gold’s Gym, vows to support the participants in living healthy and encourages them to integrate the good habits into their family’s lifestyle. “With the success of the recent Gold’ s Gym Transformation Challenge, we can expect more exciting challenges to come before the year ends,” he said.
