Navy to conduct underwater training in Outer Apra Harbor
ASAN, Guam—Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 5 will conduct underwater detonation training in Outer Apra Harbor May 18. There will be no underwater detonation training in April.
The activity will run from 8am to 4pm and the Coast Guard will restrict access in the vicinity of northwest Outer Apra Harbor.
As part of the training, EODMU 5 will detonate four separate 1.25-lb explosives beneath the water’s surface away from coral and on a sandy bottom.
The Navy is permitted to routinely conduct underwater detonation training by the National Marine Fisheries Service under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
The Navy carefully follows mitigation procedures to ensure minimal impact to the environment. For the safety of personnel and marine life, the area will be visually cleared by divers and by a lookout on the surface before, during and after the exercise. All activity will cease temporarily if a person or marine mammal is seen in the area.
