The Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence held a walk to celebrate April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month around the village of Chalan Kanoa yesterday.

The Walk & Roll Against Sexual Violence attracted several dozen community members and was done to spread awareness against sexual violence and for victims to speak up and speak out against sexual violence, domestic abuse, and child abuse.

Coalition executive director Maisie Tenorio said the walk was a part of the group’s sexual assault campaign. The campaign’s purpose is raise awareness on sexual assault and sexual violence.

She said the walk was also to raise hope for sexually assaulted victims who are battling it or have battled the traumatizing experience.

The Walk & Roll Against Sexual Violence was also to educate the neighborhood about the coalition and what their campaign is all about. It was also to get the community involved in the fight against sexual assault and sexual violence.

According to Tenorio, a walk was also scheduled for Kagman but it was cancelled on account of rain. This walk was the first of its kind for the month of April and this year.

According to Tenorio, over a hundred people participated in the Walk & Roll Against Sexual Violence event yesterday. In Tenorio’s perspective, the walk was a success.

T-shirts were distributed before the walk to everyone who volunteered and registered.

An official who requested anonymity joined the walk because of the cause. He believes that because of this walk, whoever is hiding behind trauma of being sexually abused, can finally speak up after seeing the many people who are fighting for them.
