Suspect in Garapan stabbing a Beilida Overseas employee
An argument over a phone charger triggered a stabbing in Garapan in which a 24-year-old man was injured on Thursday night. Court documents also showed that the arrested suspect is an employee of Beilida Overseas (CNMI) Ltd.
Chuan Nian Bi, 44, a Chinese national, was arrested on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery. At a hearing yesterday, he informed the court that he is a “labor assistance” for Beilida Overseas.
The victim, Zudou Ma, a Chinese national, suffered a wound on the left chest area and a laceration on the left arm. He was transported to the Commonwealth Health Center for further treatment. It’s not clear whether he is also an employee of Beilida.
Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho maintained the $50,000 cash bail that was originally imposed on Bi by Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo.
Assistant public defender Nancy Dominski was appointed as counsel for Bi. Assistant attorney general Chester Hinds appeared for the government. Preliminary hearing will be on April 25 at 1:30pm.
MCC International is the construction contractor for Imperial Pacific. Beilida Overseas is a subcontractor of MCC. The Garapan offices of the two companies were searched by the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently.
Police Detective Danny Joe Fitial stated in his report that a Koban Unit police officer responded on Thursday at 9:15pm at the Queens Apartment Building in western Garapan, where a stabbing in progress was reported.
A security guard at Queens Apartment escorted the officer to the second floor of the building, where the injured Ma was lying on the ground.
The officer then requested the Department of Public Safety Central for medics and crime scene technician. Ma was subsequently taken to the hospital.
Bi was arrested at the scene. He had a laceration on the face.
Fitial said witnesses stated that Bi and Ma had an argument on the fourth floor.
Later, Bi took a fruit knife, came down to the second floor, where he stabbed Ma. Other people tried to stop Bi from assaulting Ma.
Police failed to recover the knife.
Ma told police that he was packing his belongings as he was going back to China, and noticed that his phone charger was missing.
Ma asked Bi about his charger. Bi denied having it and that resulted in an argument. Ma later checked Bi’s luggage. Bi got mad and the two got into a fight. Other individuals pacified the two, but Bi later attacked Ma with the knife.
