Kagman High School is proud to announce two Ayuyus have been accepted into the Junior Statesmen Summer program to attend classes at Stanford University this summer of 2017.

Justine Kirby and Dionisses Valdisimo both applied and were accepted into this year’s cohort of participants. Valdisimo also won one of the coveted scholarships awarded to CNMI students to attend the program this summer.

“The mission of the Junior State of America and the Junior Statesmen Foundation (JSA) is to strengthen American democracy by educating and preparing high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society.

In the student-run Junior State and at JSA summer schools and summer institutes, participants learn statesmanship as they engage in political discourse. They cultivate democratic leadership skills, challenge one another to think critically, advocate their own opinions, develop respect for opposing views and learn to rise above self-interest to promote the public good” (http://jsa.org/about/the-junior-statesmen-foundation/mission/).

Another summer program KHS Ayuyus will be represented this summer is in this year’s STEP-UP Program.

KHS students snagged three out of the four available spots for the CNMI. Seniors Tara Tudela and Khloe Borja will be participating for a second year in a row. Alyssa Cepeda is a Junior and will be participating for the first time this year.

“STEP-UP stands for Short-Term Research Experience for Underrepresented Persons. STEP-UP is a NIH/NIDDK funded program that provides hands-on biomedical and behavioral research opportunities to eager high school juniors and seniors from underrepresented and/or disadvantaged backgrounds. Pacific STEP-UP is a component of the program designed specifically to address some of the unique challenges faced by students living in the Pacific Basin who are curious about and interested in careers involving science and research” (https://www.pacificstepup.org/faqs).
