Man gets 4 days in prison for domestic violence
A man arrested twice last year on charges of domestic violence and punching the window of a car being driven by a minor was slapped on Tuesday with a four-day prison sentence.
The 23-year-old Jiro Kazuo Takai was sentenced to a total of one year and six months in prison, all suspended except for four days, for assault and battery and disturbing the peace. He was given credit for four days of time served. That means he immediately goes free.
Takai was placed on supervised probation for a year. His bail, $1,000, shall be used to satisfy his $500 fine, $25 court costs, and $100 probation fee.
Takai was required to perform 1,000 hours of community service and complete anger management counseling. He is barred from any contact with his ex-girlfriend and two minors, and from consuming any alcohol while on probation.
The former girlfriend has relocated to the U.S. mainland.
Chief Public Defender Douglas W. Hartig, who represented Takai, said that all these started as a small argument and the one punch Takai delivered was not intentional.
Hartig had said that additional jail time is unwarranted given Takai’s extreme remorse and willingness to face the consequences, and the support he has gotten and his good character.
Takai entered a “global” plea agreement with the government. He pleaded guilty last Jan. 31 to assault and battery-domestic violence and disturbing the peace.
The remaining charge of robbery and two counts of disturbing the peace involving two minors were dropped.
Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo presided over the case.
Takai punched his then-girlfriend in the face, causing her bodily harm, on Sept. 27, 2016. The victim suffered multiple injuries and could barely walk because of pain after Takai beat her up during their argument at his residence in Kannat Tabla, police said.
Takai was arrested last October. He subsequently posted bail. The following month, police arrested him again, this time for allegedly chasing a car being driven by a minor and repeatedly punching the window after she refused to open the door.
