Rep. Ivan A. Blanco (R-Saipan) has authored a measure that aims to impose fines and other penalties on companies that bring in foreign workers illegally.

House Bill 20-57 was introduced during Monday’s session at the House chamber on Capital Hill.

HB 20-57, if it becomes a law, would authorize the CNMI Department of Labor to enforce criminal penalties and provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act particularly Section 274 in bringing in and harboring certain aliens.

The proposed law stems from recent reports that certain contractors working on the casino hotel project in Garapan have hired workers who entered the CNMI as tourists.

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres has sought the help of the Department of Homeland Security to authorize local enforcement agencies to implement federal immigration laws following the controversy involving MCC International.
