2017 Congressional Art Competition now open
WASHINGTON, D.C.—High school students of the Northern Mariana Islands are being invited to join the annual Congressional Art Competition. The winner of the Marianas contest will have her or his artwork on display at the Capitol for one year, along with the works of students from the nation’s 441 congressional districts.
“The Congressional Art Competition was created by Congress in 1982 to encourage high school students with a passion for the visual arts to develop and showcase their talent,” said Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP). “In 2017, we mark the ninth year of Marianas students participating in this national art project. I look forward to seeing many more examples of the outstanding abilities of our young artists this year, once again.”
Sablan is a member of the Arts Caucus in the House of Representatives.
The competition is open to high school students from grades 9 through 12. The contest is free to join, and there is no specific theme. Artwork may be submitted to the congressional district offices on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota starting Monday, April 3 until Friday, April 28, at 5pm.
Artwork must be two-dimensional, and no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, including the frame. Framed pieces should weigh no more than 15 lbs.
Submissions will be judged based on originality, technical difficulty, creativity, communication, effectiveness, and overall appearance. A panel of local artists will select the winning entry.
