United Airlines’ Guam employees have received a prestigious gold safety award. The Guam hub worked diligently to achieve gold status in United’s Safety Excellence Program.

The Safety Excellence Program is designed to reduce recordable and lost-time injuries of employees as well as aircraft damage. United modeled its program after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs.

“We are very pleased to honor our Guam team with a gold safety award,” said Greg Hart, United’s executive vice president and chief operations officer. “The award recognizes the hub’s outstanding commitment to ensuring the safety of our employees. Safety is at the core of everything we do at United, and we sincerely appreciate the Guam team’s focus on safety.”

The Safety Excellence Program recognizes locations for good safety performance and culture. The certification process measures results in process knowledge, application, reductions in occupational injury, and aircraft damage rates. The gold award means achieving better than industry average.

“As Guam’s hometown airline, we are proud of our team’s dedication and hard work,” said Sam Shinohara, United’s managing director of Operations Asia/Pacific. “The gold safety award is a great milestone achievement for Guam. Guam won a silver safety award in December 2010 so we are thrilled to reach an even higher tier this year. We are committed to continuing to work hard to maintain the safety of our employees and aircraft.” (PR)
