OIA OKs $4M for CUC Tank 102 rehabilitation
The Office of Insular Affairs has authorized the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. to rehabilitate Tank 103 in Lower Base for $4,019,000.
Special assistant attorney general Teresita J. Sablan has informed the U.S. District Court for the NMI about OIA’s authorization on Monday.
OIA grants management specialist Keith W. Aughenbaugh notified CUC acting executive director Gary Camacho that OIA has reviewed the record of environmental consideration for the repair of Tank 103 and its secondary containment as required by stipulated order 2 and in accordance with the tank inspection report.
Aughenbaugh said the documentation is in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act, Council on Environmental Quality Regulations, and DOI NEPA Regulations, and Draft Departmental Manual.
Tank 103 is CUC’s only aboveground storage tank that can hold more than a day’s supply of fuel. The tank was shut down due to leaks. The leak reportedly contributes to oil contamination at power plants 1 and 2.
Last week, OIA authorized CUC to develop a waste management plan for power plants 1 and 2 in the amount of $777,000.
