The Northern Marianas College and the Department of Public Safety have agreed to work together to improve the career opportunities of police cadets.

A memorandum of agreement between NMC and DPS was signed Friday morning to formalize the enhanced efforts to train and develop police cadets. The MOA aims to reward cadets with college credits as they go through police academy training. The MOA was signed by Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, NMC president Dr. Carmen Fernandez, and DPS Commissioner Robert Deleon Guerrero.

The credits may be used toward the completion of a criminal justice associate degree, one of the more popular degrees in NMC.

“The agreement signed today launches an important collaborative and strategic partnership between NMC and DPS,” said Fernandez. “We are very excited to be working with [Deleon Guerrero] and his team at DPS in providing training to current and future police cadets.”

Along with earning college credits for a possible degree, police cadets would also be able to utilize NMC services such as the library, the student area, tutoring, financial aid, and more.

Applicants interested in becoming a cadet must first complete the English 101 placement test, test negative for drugs, pass the physical agility test, receive a favorable rating on a special background investigation, along with other requirements.

According to the agreement, DPS and NMC will participate in the selection of the instructors for the police academy but NMC will be responsible for certifying instructors for accreditation purposes.

Fernandez acknowledged the work of NMC criminal justice coordinator Zerlyn Taimanao and DPS Maj. Lawrence Camacho in preparing the agreement and seeing it through.

The Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association for Schools and Colleges accredits the Northern Marianas College.
