The manager of a travel agency and restaurant was sentenced last week to a maximum prison sentence of one year for beating up his wife at a restaurant in Susupe.

Gui Fang Lai, 43, was given credit for time served.

Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho

noted that Lai has a prior criminal conviction but failed to complete the conditions of his probation, has multiple temporary restraining orders involving domestic violence, and committed several traffic violations.

He said Lai’s abusive behavior and alleged “ice” use have caused his wife and other family members to testify against him.

The wife even filed for divorce and stated that the best thing for Lai is to go back to China.

Lai, who was represented by assistant public defender Cindy Nesbit, was accused of beating up his wife, chasing her with an axe, and breaking items at Good Day Restaurant in Susupe on March 20, 2016.
