First lady Diann Torres donated $300 to the Saipan SDA School Lego Robotics Team on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, to help the students achieve their goals for this year’s team.

The team will be travelling to Walla Walla, Washington next week to compete in the first Lego League competition, a worldwide organization that gives students the chance to identify a problem and work toward a solution.

This year the Saipan SDA School Lego Robotics team chose to research human interaction with coral reefs and came up with a way to make that interaction better.

They have conducted beach cleanups around Saipan and are working toward implementing Bio-Rock Technology to help grow coral and improve the oceanic environment around Saipan so that coral can regrow naturally.

The students are working on producing a video to get resorts and sponsors involved in their efforts to resolve/lessen the coral problems of Saipan.

When they compete on Feb. 26 the SDA team will present their research and show their progress in programming while completing challenges with their Lego robots.

The SDA team would like to thank all of their sponsors: the SDA Dental Clinic, Torres, Café MangoSix, Got Chiba, Nancy Gottfried, Douglas Daley, Frank Stewart, Coconut Scanning, and the Governor’s Office.
