CUC board debating salary hikes
The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board met yesterday to discuss salary adjustments of employees and payment of night differentials, seniority, overtime pay, and the severity of job hazards.
Board member Eric San Nicolas raised the issue that CUC’s pay scale be reviewed because new employees are quickly catching up to the pay rate of several senior employees.
During deliberations, board members agreed that several other factors must be considered such as night differential, overtime pay, and job hazard.
“It is [human resource’s job] to disaggregate pay scales and positions that deal with a hazardous environment, night differentials, and whatnot, and to cross-reference those things with the OSHA [Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970],” said San Nicolas to CUC human resources manager Andrew Orsini.
San Nicolas said that CUC’s HR should have an idea of which positions warrant night differential pay, hazardous pay, etc., “before proposing recommendations to the board.”
CUC board chair Adelina Roberto was hesitant to ask Fox Lawson about the salary adjustments, saying that posing a question to Fox Lawson might generate extra expenses for CUC.
“We have to be mindful and start dissecting it and figuring it out and go from there,” she said.
Minnesota-based Fox Lawson & Associates did a salary study that compared CUC wages to other utilities companies of a similar size.
CUC management was given 30 days to come up more details about the salary adjustment proposal.
