LITERARY NOOK
A Valentine Quintet
“Quantum Love Quantified” is a new sonnet written on Feb. 10, 2017. The other four appeared in the Saipan Tribune a few years ago. These sonnets are about how love in its myriad forms can leave us in a quandary or bogged down in a quagmire about its quality. Three of the sonnets are humorous in nature so that we might “live, love, laugh, and be happy.” Enjoy them all.
A brief definition for the Latin terms used in them follows: A “quid nunc” is a person who seeks to know all the latest news or gossip, a busybody; “quiescent” means tranquilly at rest; “quid pro quo” is something given or received by someone else. One meaning for “quietus” is removal from activity or death. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Quantum Love Quantified
how much love is enough can we ever get enough
measuring the amount of love is difficult to do
lifelong need mixed with other emotional stuff
disappointment depression and just feeling blue
love parceled out to and from giver and receiver
is like making limitations to friendship and kindness
it prevents those involved from being a true believer
when love is often simply blessed with blindness
more and more or sometimes less love is more
love finds its way around and through us all
life changes to family and friends love explores
sensible and nonsensical love will rise up and fall
it won’t fall out of fashion or any part of our lives
love from our innermost being grows and thrives
Quid Nunc Love?
what now love? the busybody asks
all he had to say was a bunch of bunk
telling tales about each and every drunk
meanwhile he came out smelling like a skunk
a three whole point sinker stinker slam dunk
he always seemed to exist in a funk
like an elephant with snot in his trunk
that couldn’t blow out a big chunk
but when it finally did it sure stunk
his recent gossip was of a teenage punk
stealing and driving an old hunk of junk
out on a frozen lake where it soon sunk
hitting the bottom with a cold clank and klunk
now a marijuana smoking monk is
the latest from busybody Quid Nunc
Love Quiescent
we lie in sweet silence musing in repose
the window half shut a soft breeze blows through
the last few rays of sunlight color your hair
as this weekend comes to a too short close
tomorrow back to work we’ll both be driving off
the taste of love in our mind and mouth
a kitty sleeps in an old rocking chair
both of us hitting dirt roads towards the South
a soft woolen blanket wards off the chill
out the window we see the car wheel ruts
on the dresser a dead wasp near a pear
we loll around the cabin or lie still
hardly any breeze now only the rustling sound
of chipmunks storing nuts underground
Love Quid Pro Quo – Shrimp for Giant Prawn
the shrimps donation got appreciation
frustration was found in its equation
liquid litigation for a saline situation
brought considerable complication
annunciation from the pink crustacean
whose aspiration was magnification
but lacked justification and qualification
thus some nullification of the operation
still temptation for prawn fornication
genus exploration and gender glorification
provided plenty of patient process purification
followed by acrobatic aqueous pacification
thus starting with sublimation on its vacation
the cool crustacean began real relaxation
Love’s Quietus
there’s a time when love goes on quietus
we think we won’t let love operate us
a Besame Mucho Café will blue plate us
with leftovers and infidelity flatus
there’s no need to tempt or salivate us
or in any way try to recreate us
though perhaps it is time to restate us
as transparency begins to liberate us
matchmakers try their best to mate us
so we can ultimately duplicate us
try as they might love will exonerate us
as such amorous attempts begin to grate us
As the World Turns soaps, suds, gyrates us
love’s quietus will eliminate us
