A 65-year-old retiree who is accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl on Rota several times pleaded guilty yesterday.
Manases Masga Manglona Sr., through assistant public defender Tillman Clark, entered an open plea yesterday—which only means that he has no written plea agreement with the government.

He did plead guilty to sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree and disturbing the peace.

Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho set Manglona’s sentencing on July 5, 2017.

A bench trial that was supposed to take place on March 13, 2017, at the Rota Superior Court was vacated.

On Sept. 13, 2016, the Office of the Attorney General charged Manglona with disturbing the peace, assault and battery, and two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 31 years and six months in prison.

On Dec. 14, 2016, the OAG filed amended the charges to sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, assault and battery, and disturbing the peace. The offenses carry a maximum sentence of 16 years and six months prison term.

Yesterday, the OAG again amended the charges to sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree and disturbing the peace. The offenses carry a maximum prison sentence of five years and six months.

Manglona has one prior criminal case, which was filed in 1981, for assault and battery.

Last Dec. 28, Camacho rejected the government’s plea deal offer, finding it too lenient. It recommended a five-year prison term for Manglona.

The Department of Public Safety Central received a call last Sept. 6 from a school principal on Rota about a sexual abuse case. The girl allegedly told a teacher that Manglona has been sexually abusing her and that she wants it to stop.
