Soroptimist shines light on human trafficking

Soroptimist International of Northern Mariana Islands will be hosting a panel discussion on human trafficking on Feb 16, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
Called “Together We Can End Human Trafficking in the Marianas,” the panel discussion will take place at the Giovani’s Restaurant, from 11:30am to 12:30pm.
Lauri Ogumoro, Karidat executive director, and Pamela Brown Blackburn, Pacific Ombudsman for Humanitarian Law executive director, will speak about human trafficking in the Marianas with emphasis on ways to identify victims, ways to assist victims and community actions to prevent the continued abuse of the victims.
Blackburn and Ogumoro will speak from decades of experience combatting human trafficking in the Commonwealth.
Human trafficking affects communities globally. The United States is labelled a country of origin, a transit country, and a destination country. No community is immune. From small rural towns to large metropolitan cities, from farms in the middle of deserts and high plains to plantations on tropical islands, from 5-star hotel resorts to loud, hot factories, human beings are being forced to perform services, from sewing burlap bags to prostitution. Human trafficking knows no gender distinction, no ethnic distinction, no socio-economic distinction, no age distinction. Anyone can be a victim of human trafficking. This is why it is recognized as the fastest growing criminal enterprise globally. It can be stopped, however, through informing ourselves about it and what each of us can do to end it.
