Borja to push for local entrepreneurship
The Commonwealth Development Authority, the government agency tasked with encouraging investments in the Commonwealth, has several programs for those interested in becoming entrepreneurs.
And if confirmed by the Senate to the CDA board, Frank Lee San Nicolas Borja wants to encourage the public to avail of CDA’s programs. His aim? To promote and encourage local entrepreneurship.
Gov. Ralph DLG Torres nominated Borja to fill one of CDA’s board member post representing Tinian. The Senate Committee on Executive Appointments and Government Investigations, chaired by Sen. Francisco Q. Cruz (R-Tinian), held his confirmation hearing yesterday on Capital Hill.
Borja, once confirmed, said he would encourage members of the community to become local entrepreneurs, a move that could also help the economy and provide assistance to other investors.
“I’m a big supporter of local entrepreneurship. And this is definitely what I would focus on if I’m confirmed. We need to build the local capacity of being entrepreneurs. I know a lot of people here in our community who has that capability and we will definitely reach out to them once given the opportunity to serve at CDA,” said Borja.
He added that entrepreneurs have the opportunity to assist other businesses that are investing in the CNMI. “It would be a big help to the CNMI economy. …Definitely I would work with the municipality, the delegation, and the CDA’s current board members and management to see on how we could further improve Tinian.”
Borja said he would also focus on how to inform and reach out to the community once he is given the chance to serve on the board. “The issue that was raised here was how to reach out to the local community. Some of the loan programs are readily available for the public, especially for local entrepreneurs.”
“Once confirmed, that is definitely what I would be looking forward to, to reach out to the public using my local capacity and encourage them to be entrepreneurs to help stimulate the local economy.”
Borja is a former intern at the office of Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (Ind-MP) and holds a master’s degree in public administration.
