NMC Regent Nominating Committee eyed

Gov. Ralph DLG Torres wants to create a Regent Nominating Committee for the Northern Marianas College to put in place a systematic process for membership on the board.
In a letter to acting House speaker Janet U. Maratita (R-Saipan) and acting Senate president Steve K. Mesngon (R-Rota), Torres said his proposed legislation would create an open and systematic nomination process for those who will become NMC regents.
“Education has been one of this administration’s top priorities,” said Torres. “Without question, NMC’s success leads to the CNMI’s overall success. It is imperative that we protect and maintain NMC’s accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and Senior College and University Commission.”
All sectors of the NMC community—students, faculty, staff, leadership, and alumni—would be represented in the nominating committee.
“I’ve been working collaboratively with the NMC Board of Regents and NMC president [Dr. Carmen Fernandez] on legislation that would effectively sustain NMC’s accreditation by strengthening autonomy of the board’s membership nomination process,” said Torres.
“Nominees to the board [will be] closely examined by a diverse array of stakeholders pertinent to the [NMC’s] goals and missions,” he said
Establishing the Regent Nominating Committee, he said, would make the process more transparent and protect the NMC board from any government or legislative influence.
The proposed committee will consist of seven members, each appointed by the NMC board: the municipal mayors (Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands where it will be on a rotational basis), Associated Students of NMC, the NMC faculty and staff senate, NMC Council, and NMC Alumni Association.
All members shall serve a one-year terms with the Board of Regents’ appointee serving as the committee’s chairperson that would preside over all meetings. A vice chairman will be elected from among the remaining six members.
