Before leaving for a two-week official trip to Washington, D.C. Gov. Benigno R. Fitial certified the over-the-cap salaries of two assistant attorneys general.

The governor granted his approval on July 9 to allow assistant attorneys general Rebecca J. Wrightson and Margo Brown to receive an annual salary of $52,000, which is above the $50,000 per annum salary cap.

The Salary Amendment Act of 1992 sets the salary ceiling for government employees at $50,000. However, the law gives the governor the authority to waive the ceiling, and submit a certification to the Legislature.

The governor is also mandated to advise the Civil Service Commission of any move to grant over-the-cap salaries.

Last month, Fitial also certified the over-the-cap salaries of four Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. doctors, each receiving anywhere between $130,000 and $200,000 per annum.
