Fiesta Resort nears regular season sweep

Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan is just a win away from sweeping the regular season of the 2016 TanHoldings Christmas Basketball Tournament following its 48-24 rout of QQ Rent A Car in the women’s division game last Monday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.

Fiesta now has a 6-0 record in the seven-team field and will attempt to keep its perfect mark this Saturday when it takes on Sun Palace (4-2).

Chevy Kate Alipio top-scored in Fiesta’s 24-point win against QQ Rent A Car after registering 11 points. Three of his teammates chipped in at least 6 points apiece to ease past their foe.

Fiesta is already assured of one of the four semis spots in its group, Sun Palace, IT& E (5-2), and CTSI (5-1).

Sun Palace and IT&E formalized their entry to the playoff round after downing separate foes this week. IT&E pummeled Armatech, 67-8, last Wednesday, while Sun Palace topped QQ Rent A Car last Monday, 28-18.

Jeralyn Castillo towed Sun Palace to the double-figure win against QQ after scoring 14 points.

IT&E, on the other hand, spread the wealth to hand Armatech (2-4) a beating. Jan Travilla, Tawnie Manibusan, and Karleen Reyes all tallied twin digits, while four other IT&E players contributed at least 4 points apiece.

Armatech made only three field goals in the entire game and had no player hitting more than one basket in the lopsided match.

Meanwhile, in the boys 25 division, the Ol’Aces 2 is likely to march into the semis round as it improved to a 4-1 record following a 63-40 victory over Rollers 1 (3-1) last Monday.

The Ol’Aces 2 took the solo lead in the division, which has six teams and only four will advance to the next round.

Jeff Castro paced the Ol’Aces 2 with his 15 points, while R.J. Paragados added 11.

In other results, MHS and Ol’Aces 1 downed their respective opponents in the boys U16 division.

The Ol’Aces 1 (3-4), which are out of the playoff race, capped its season with a 48-44 triumph over Gen Cup (2-5). The Ol’Aces finished fifth out of the eight teams in the division, just a win behind last semifinalist Rollers 1 (4-2).

MHS, on the other hand, joined the Ol’Aces 2 in second place as the former also ended the elimination round with a 5-2 mark after easing past the 670 Thunder, 46-32. The 670 Thunder is also out of contention, while its sister team 670 Sonics took the first semis seat after wrapping up the regular season with a clean 7-0 mark.
