WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) wrote to Secretary of Defense James Mattis to request that he include Guam in his upcoming trip to the Asia-Pacific region. The Department of Defense announced that Mattis will visit Japan and South Korea during his first trip abroad as secretary of Defense.

“I am pleased that Secretary Mattis recognizes the importance of the Asia-Pacific region and is making his first trip abroad as Defense secretary to meet with our allies and partners in the region. I hope that he will consider including a visit to Guam in his travel plans to gain a firsthand understanding of the unique contributions our island and our people make to our national security. Guam is a critical component of the U.S. strategic posture in the region. I hope that Secretary Mattis will take this opportunity to visit Guam and express the administration’s commitment to the Marine realignment.” (PR)
