House Speaker Rafael S. Demapan (R-Saipan) intends to prod the House of Representatives in a direction that would prioritize critical policies that would have a great impact on the CNMI, especially in its economic development.

The 20th Legislature held its first regular session yesterday on Capital Hill. The House leadership met Monday to prepare for yesterday’s session.

Demapan said the cooperation of all House members is necessary in steering the leadership’s course in the next two years.

“Steering it toward a strategic, meaningful, and sound policies to meet the needs of our growing economy. At the same time, addressing the challenges faced by our government, the business sector, and our people,” he said.

He said the House’s work and responsibility has become monumental. “There is so much at stake to ensure that the economic and social progress of the CNMI remains on track. I will continue to work closely with each representative and urge House committees to work closely with various government agencies, the private sector, and the community.”

“[This is] to identify our greatest and most critical issues facing us today and in the future. And to also ensure that we actually measure our performance and progress,” Demapan said.

Working with the entire House leadership—GOP super majority and the minority—is one of the steps in achieving their goals for the entire community. “My leadership team would work to focus in identifying key priority issues of each member and of each House committee chair.”

Their next step would also involve each House committee to connect with the private sector, government agencies, and other members of the community.

“This is only one of the first steps to better shape and identify existing and new legislation, and appropriations that needs to be prioritized in the next two years,” said Demapan.

He also urged the entire community to get more involved in the legislative process by attending sessions where they could voice out their concerns.
