TAMUNING, Guam—In a first for Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Centers for Disease Control are hosting specialized training workshops focused on countering bioterrorism next month.

The “Joint Criminal-Epidemiological Investigations Workshops” will give law enforcers, public health workers, emergency responders, and local government officials a better understanding of possible threats, strategies for disrupting them, and protocols for responding to suspicious incidents.

This workshop has been offered for more than 10 years in the United States, but never in Guam or the CNMI. It will be held this Feb. 21 and 22 in Tumon, and Feb. 23 and 24 on Capital Hill, Saipan.

The workshop will prepare professionals from different fields and organizations for their roles in the potential event of a bioterrorism incident. It will also be an opportunity for local law enforcement and public health agencies to identify the assets and capabilities available on the islands. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of the expertise and resources each entity has to offer.

The training will benefit emergency preparedness managers, local police, task force officers, FBI, first responders/EMS, fire/hazmat, civil support teams epidemiologists, local and state laboratories, community health specialists, public health nurses and physicians.

There is no cost to attend, but there is limited seating. Agencies interested in sending a participant may register online at http://www.train.org (Guam Course # 1067074/Saipan Course # 1067081). After registering, submit their name, telephone number and email address to (Guam) trinisha.cabrera@ic.fbi.gov and/or john.kowatch@ic.fbi.gov /(Saipan) haejun.park@ic.fbi.gov. (PR)
