Region 2 Lions Clubs plans to increase its membership in 2017, even as the umbrella organization of all three Lions Club groups in the CNMI hopes to be more visible in the community.
Ladyvir Canape, Region 2 Lions Clubs chair, said the three Lions Clubs in the Northern Marianas—Fil-Am Lions Club, Saipan Marianas Lions Club, and Alliance Lions Club—have 120 members.
“We would really like to continue the annual projects of Lions Club and increase membership by recruiting more and being visible to the community by having more projects that will benefit the community,” said Canape.
She said Region 2 Lions Clubs want to build on its many activities in 2016.
Some of the activities Region 2 Lions Clubs were able to accomplish last year were adoptions of school bus stops on Navy Hill, in Gualo Rai, Chalan Lau Lau, As Perdido, and Koblerville.
Canape said they were able to donate two wheelchairs to the Commonwealth Health Center’s dialysis center in 2016, conduct toy drive/donations to CHC Pediatric Unit & CDAC Early Intervention Program, and help with the annual Health Fair.
Region 2 Lions Clubs were also able organize Feed the Hunger campaign in 2016, which was a food drive for Tinian Dynasty Hotel employees and Susupe fire victims.
The organization was also able to charter a new club in 2016; the Saipan Alliance Lions Club became its third and newest club.
She said Region 2 Lions Clubs is helping in every which way it can “to be of service to community.”
Canape encouraged anyone who has an inclination to help the community to join the Lions Club.
“The only qualification to become a Lion member is if you have a heart to serve. Lions Clubs International will continue to serve the community in the areas of environment, youth, hunger, and vision,” she said.
Lions Clubs International is an international secular, non-political service organization founded by Melvin Jones in 1917. As of April 2015, it had over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members in over 200 countries around the world making it the world’s largest service club organization.
