GUAM—United Airlines announced yesterday that Team Guam was the overall winner of the annual United Ramp Rodeo in 2016.

United teams from around the world competed at the Ramp Rodeo, held Nov. 9-10, 2016, in Houston, Texas. Ramp service employees competed in various areas of airport operations. They tested skills they use on the job, such as driving, loading and unloading aircraft, marshaling signals, and aircraft pushbacks.

The winning Team Guam members included Eddie Olkeriil, lead ramp service employee; Tom Daga, ramp service employee; Rick San Nicolas, ramp service employee; and Joe Rapanut, ramp service employee. They received individual trophies, a team trophy, and tablets as Ramp Rodeo champions.

“As Guam’s hometown airline, United is proud of the Guam employees who earned the top prize from United’s first Ramp Rodeo,” said Sam Shinohara, managing director of Operations Asia/Pacific. “The Guam employees set the bar high as the first champions of this annual competition that promotes airline safety. The competition not only fosters team building but also sharing of best practices for safe airport operations.”

United modeled the Ramp Rodeo after ones conducted by the U.S. Air Force. The United Ramp Rodeo serves as an opportunity for employees to test their knowledge and skills as well as to learn from each other. When winners return to their stations, they are expected to be role models for their peers by executing various tasks safely. (PR)
